Mississippi reports 29 cases of Vibrio bacterial infection so far for this yearMISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – The Mississippi State Department of Health is warning beach-goers and seafood lovers about a potential danger. Mississippi has reported 29 cases of Vibrio bacteria infection so far this year. 18 of the Vibrio cases have been in the lower 6 counties of the state, including the coastal counties. Vibrio bacteria live in warm coastal water and can cause illness when exposed to an open wound or when a person eats contaminated seafood, particularly raw or undercooked seafood, such as oysters. They also recommend against eating raw or undercooked oysters or other shellfish, and always wash your hands when handling raw shellfish.
