Liberal Democrat leaders, organised by Oxfordshire County Council's Tim Bearder, have written to the Home Secretary, asking the Government to safeguard overseas care workers currently living and working in the UK. This comes amid reports of potential government plans that could force thousands of care workers to leave the country by retrospectively changing the rules of workers' rights to stay in the country. The letter follows repeated warnings from councils that the social care sector is struggling to recruit enough domestic staff while the demand for care continues to rise. The leaders are calling on the Home Secretary to provide certainty for overseas care workers currently employed in regulated care settings and commit to not changing the rules retrospectively. They also called on the Government to recognise the enormous contribution overseas care workers have made to the wellbeing of communities.
