Colombia's De La Espriella Sworn In As President, Breaking Tradition With Cali Ceremony

Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in Friday as Colombia's president in Cali, breaking with more than a century of tradition by holding the country's presidential inauguration outside the capital of Bogotá for the first time since 1898, as the right-wing lawyer and businessman takes office promising a sharp reversal of outgoing President Gustavo Petro's security and foreign policy approach.
The ceremony took place at Arena USC in Cali, a city in Colombia's southwest that served as a stronghold for Petro during his presidency.
De la Espriella had originally sought to hold the inauguration at a military base in nearby Cauca, a region heavily affected by the country's internal armed conflict, but relocated the event after nearby volcanic activity made that site impractical.
José Manuel Restrepo was sworn in alongside him as vice president, becoming only the second rector of the Universidad del Rosario to hold the office.
On foreign policy, De la Espriella has promised to restore diplomatic ties with Israel, which Petro severed, and has said he would move Colombia's embassy to Jerusalem, aligning the country's posture with Argentina under President Javier Milei.
