Legal experts have hit out at what they say is an unfair system that protects high-profile offenders at the expense of their alleged victims. Melbourne Law School’s Associate Professor Jason Bosland said prolonged suppression orders had a profound impact on victims and “reinforces the idea that we’ve got to protect these men until there’s a guilty verdict”. “We’ve seen Victorian suppression orders remaining on foot for months, if not years. Mr Quill described the Silvagni and Carr cases as “examples of what (he) would call the mental harm suppression orders”. “That’s not what the (open courts) legislation was designed for, so it feels a little bit like they’re gaming the system.”
