The Russia sanctions and tariffs would sunset five years after the bill’s enactment. In addition to Russia sanctions, the bill would extend the expiration date of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996, which penalizes companies that invest in Iran’s energy sector. The House, which is on recess until Aug. 31, has not indicated whether it will take up the Senate bill. The House previously passed a Russia sanctions and Ukraine aid bill in June, a vote that only happened after supporters used a discharge petition to force a vote over GOP leadership’s objections. The sponsor of the House-passed bill, Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, D-N.Y., has expressed opposition to the Senate bill’s tariff provisions.
