Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Friday expressed serious concern over the long-term fiscal impact of expanding free schemes. The court observed that if governments continue implementing free schemes without limits, "even Kubera, the god of wealth, will end up doing wage labour under employment schemes." The court also questioned the rationale behind extending benefits such as Rythu Bandhu to crorepatis. He observed that after meeting expenditure on salaries and debt repayments, a substantial portion of the State budget was being spent on welfare schemes. After recording the government's submission, the High Court directed the State to file an affidavit detailing the payment schedule for the remaining amount and adjourned the matter to August 19.
