The tech giant is starting the final phase of its Google Assistant retirement on Sept. 4, 2026, moving Android users to Gemini as the company’s default AI assistant experience. The company informed existing Assistant users through email that “Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued” and that “Gemini—our next-generation AI-powered assistant—is now the assistant experience on Android.” The change affects Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and vehicles using Android Auto through a phone connection. Cars with Google built-in, which run Android Automotive, will continue supporting Google Assistant beyond the September deadline.
