'Wigan can feel better about itself': Ian McKellen's message to the town

The acclaimed actor, who attended Wigan Grammar School as a child, recorded a video message reflecting on his memories of the town and explaining why Pride events remain important.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's event, Sir Ian said: "When I first went to Wigan Grammar School in 1951, I had to learn the school song:Sir Ian McKellen has shared a message of support ahead of Wigan Pride 2026 (Image: Wigan Council)"'Oh, Wigan is a grand old town... the Romans knew it well... it always had its good king coal... as long as folks can tell.'"
Reflecting on how the town has changed since then, he added: "Well, coal no more in Wigan, and no more grammar school either.
Sir Ian also reminisced about spending his pocket money on Uncle Joe's Mint Balls as a schoolboy.
Wigan Pride was created following a visit by Sir Ian to the town 12 years ago, and the actor also attended the event in 2017.
