Aires Mateus Sculpts a New Entrance for France's Musée des Augustins in a Centuries-Old Religious Compound

Currently nearing the end of a nine-year restoration and reorganization program, the complex partially reopened in December 2025 with a new $2.3 million ticket hall by Portuguese firm Aires Mateus.
“We noticed that, historically, special architectonic elements—portals, doorways, window surrounds—were made from stone in Toulouse,” explains Aires Mateus.

To heighten inclusivity, Aires Mateus kept the acoustics lively, so that the visually impaired can gauge the hall’s amplitude, though staff find it a little noisy.
