Thomas Spight Hines, Jr., the dean of modern Los Angeles architectural historians and professor emeritus of history and architecture at the University of California, died at the age of 89 on July 26.
Another UCLA colleague, Michael Osman, associate professor of architecture and urban design, recalls Hines generously offering to read his book manuscript.
After retiring from UCLA, Hines was a fixture at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) in Brentwood, where he would continue research and writing up until his death.
A significant number of the recordings, which are available online, include Neutra family members and other direct sources of modern architecture.
Mayne observes “Tom insisted that buildings could never be understood apart from the worlds that produced them, pushing architectural history beyond style toward something larger.”
