In his victory remarks, Democrat Donavan McKinney made sure people knew he, unlike Thanedar, represented the racial profile of the 13th District. The great irony is that this is exactly the kind of politics Thanedar tried to prop up while in Washington. But the Congressional Black Caucus, a group of black representatives in Congress, pledged that it wouldn’t let that happen. McKinney received endorsements from a large number of members of the Congressional Black Caucus, whereas Thanedar was only backed by two caucus members. While admitting that black representation is important, he also noted that “race should not be a factor” in electing a representative.
