The political make-up of the new commission includes 12 Republicans, one Democrat, and one Independent. Incumbent Republican 5th district commissioner Glynn Merriman was defeated in the May GOP Primary. Third district commissioner Jack Barton, a Democrat, who was seeking a full four-year term in the election Thursday was also defeated. Incumbent Republican first district commissioner Tom Chandler also chose not to seek re-election this year.
