Orbit, born William Mark Wainwright in London on 15 December 1956, developed a career that moved between electronic music, pop production, classical reinterpretation, songwriting and studio experimentation. Orbit’s contribution to Ray Of Light earned him Grammy recognition, with the album winning Best Pop Album and Orbit also receiving the Best Dance Recording Grammy for the title track. Orbit contributed to her 2000 album Music, co-wrote and performed on “Beautiful Stranger”, and later co-produced six songs for her 2012 album MDNA. Their 1997 sessions became Ray Of Light, released in February 1998 after four months of recording in New York and Los Angeles. His influence is particularly evident in the way electronic production became an integral part of contemporary pop rather than a separate musical world.
