A cairn of basalt rocks stands beside an unsigned trail along Beatty Creek in the La Grande watershed. (Jayson Jacoby/Baker City Herald)No trail through the woods is as enticing as the one you didn’t expect to find. What none of those ungulates can do, so far as I know, is wield a saw and cut logs. And when you see one close to what appears to be a trail, that’s nearly as certain as a sign. I stumbled across a real trail recently — literally, as I stubbed my toe on a spruce root and nearly went down.
