Infantino’s World Cup sell-off debacle has rocked football but Fifa’s crisis has deep and rotten roots

With an ally elected, the US, Mexico and Canada won the right to host the 2026 World Cup. The plan to sell off a chunk of the World Cup is just the most egregious example. Why would you sell off 21% of all future revenues for only 28% of what this World Cup made? Plans to expand the World Cup to 64 teams, rallying Infantino’s base, have been accelerated. The first tournament that might be boycotted is the Under- 20 Women’s World Cup, which begins in Poland on 5 September.
