PAKISTAN — The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has endorsed the proposal to create new provinces in the country, describing the move as a potential step towards better governance, stronger administrative decentralisation and more equitable economic development. The ceremony was attended by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Supreme Court judges, senior members of the legal fraternity and representatives of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council. Rashid said the SCBA supported Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent call for a debate on the creation of additional provinces. According to the SCBA president, the creation of additional provinces through constitutional means could strengthen governance by bringing administration closer to people at the grassroots level. The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), however, adopted a more procedural position on the issue during its 250th meeting in Islamabad.
