Almost one million cervical screening reminder notifications were never sent. A review into the National Cervical Screening Programme found that reminder letters and notifications intended to prompt people to attend routine cervical screening or follow-up appointments were not sent on a massive scale. These questions are especially important for wāhine Māori, who already experience some of the poorest cervical cancer outcomes in Aotearoa. That makes every missed reminder more than just a missed letter. For many New Zealanders, particularly wāhine Māori who have long experienced inequitable health outcomes, this is not merely an administrative failure.
