SANTA FE, N.M. – A Santa Fe County judge ordered Meta to pay a $567 million abatement fund after ruling the company failed to protect children who use its platform from mental health issues or exploitation. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez reacted after the ruling and said the court’s decision sets a precedent for other states. A jury trial awarded the state $375 million in March, bringing the total payments owed by Meta to $942 million. $420 million from the ruling yesterday are set to cover treatment for youth mental health issues.
