(ABC 6 News) — A special event got underway in Clear Lake on Friday as bronze statues of three musical legends were unveiled at the Surf Ballroom.
Organizers unveiled three life-size bronze statues to honor the legacies of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.
They last performed together on the Surf Ballroom stage in February 1959 before a tragic plane crash took the lives of all three.
Decades after the singers’ deaths, Connie Valens, Ritchie Valens’ little sister, was able to the final performance of Holly, Richardson, and Valens as a living reminder at the Surf Ballroom.
The Surf Ballroom is an anchor in the story as the venue has hosted several music icons, and for Valens, the ballroom is home.
