Sitima said the cargo train was transporting fertilizer from Balaka to Kanengo, with the two security guards assigned to escort the shipment alongside the train operators. Upon reaching Chidzuma, the suspects allegedly informed their employer that the train had developed a mechanical fault before later claiming that unknown criminals had stolen the fertilizer. During the investigation, officers intercepted a 20-tonne Ford truck along the Kanengo–Salima Road carrying all 220 bags of the suspected stolen fertilizer. Police have since recovered all 220 bags of fertilizer and investigations are continuing to trace the train operators and any other individuals believed to have been involved in the alleged theft.
