Julia Jansch’s documentary From Dust We Spin is as much about the distinctly South African motorsport of car spinning as it is about a girl learning to take up space in her own life. The film follows teenager Logan Maart, who despite her quiet de-meanour has developed a passion for spinning and her teacher, Mark Linden, who’s ready to confront any obstacle to pursue his love for spinning, even the law. In one especially compelling scene, Logan and Mark discuss the sign for infinity, the figure eight. Logan has gone from zero to infinity. “He was telling me about spinning in the Cape Flats and how spinning is helping people have an interest in something other than the drugs and the gangs,” she says.
