‘Boyhood’ Star Ellar Coltrane Reveals He’s Traded Hollywood for Manual Labor and Firefighting

More than a decade removed from that release, Coltrane has now revealed just how far he’s stepped away from the industry that made him briefly famous.
“I do manual labor, and I’m a volunteer firefighter, and I’m working on my EMT license right now.”
He’s appeared in several independent films since ‘Boyhood’ wrapped, including 2019’s ‘Summer Night,’ 2020’s ‘The Get Together,’ and 2025’s ‘Spiral into the Yellow Void,’ and remains involved with the independent film community in El Paso, Texas.
He’s also expressed genuine openness to returning under the right circumstances, describing a specific kind of creative partnership he still finds meaningful.
Whether or not another film ever brings him back, Coltrane seems entirely at peace with the life he’s built well outside the spotlight.
