U.S. President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Thursday aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and cracking down on so-called “birth tourism,” according to The Guardian. The administration argues that these categories fall outside the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship. The second executive order targets “birth tourism,” the practice of traveling to the United States to give birth so a child acquires U.S. citizenship. “They’ve taken birthright citizenship, and they’ve made a joke out of it,” Trump said. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Trump’s earlier executive order on birthright citizenship, reaffirming that the Constitution guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil.
