The new restrictions come amid a growing protest movement in the region, where people are demanding constitutional changes that the government has so far rejected.
The media restrictions appear to be part of a renewed push by the country’s military chief and de facto leader, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to tighten the government’s control Pakistani society.
As part of these efforts, the government has also curbed the activities of Islamist groups that were long tolerated or even backed, Reuters reports.
Since his appointment as Army Chief in 2022, Munir has consolidated the military’s unchallenged power over Pakistan’s political system while presenting the country as a stable partner to its Western allies, notably Washington.
