The Council of Ministers has approved a constitutional amendment bill aimed at removing legal obstacles to South Sudan’s planned general elections in December 2026. The approval came during the Cabinet’s regular meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir on Friday. Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol told the Cabinet that the current Transitional Constitution links elections to the adoption of a permanent constitution, creating a legal inconsistency with the peace agreement. The proposed amendment seeks to harmonize the two legal frameworks and pave the way for the conduct of elections in December. The bill will now be forwarded to the Transitional National Legislature for consideration.
