A request to rezone land for a proposed expansion of the Jeff Davis Parish sanitary landfill advanced Wednesday after the parish’s zoning commission voted to recommend approval to the Police Jury following a brief public hearing. The request, submitted by Sellers and Associates on half of the Jeff Davis Parish Sanitary Landfill Commission, seeks to rezone approximately 176 acres at 16157 Landfill Road in Welsh from A-1 agricultural to I-2 heavy industrial. The property is adjacent to the existing landfill and would be used for a future expansion. Greg Marcanel, speaking on behalf of the landfill commission, said the expansion has been under consideration for many years and that the landfill commission has owned the property for about 25 years. Police Juror Steve Eastman described the proposal as an expansion of the existing landfill onto adjoining property.
