Thieves stole €4 million ($4.6 million) worth of art from Italian fuel distribution company Lilli Petroli in an overnight raid at the firm’s headquarters in Abruzzo. The Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reports that the thieves made off with roughly 30 artworks, all belonging to the company’s owner Mauro Lilli. While news reports have connected the theft to coordinated art trafficking rings, art theft expert Christopher Marinello, founder of Art Recovery International, told Ocula that this is unlikely. As the stolen works are easily identifiable, they will not fetch high prices after being stolen. It appears to me as some sort of revenge, more of an attack on the company or on Mauro Lilli himself,” said Marinello.
