As Gatwick prepares to proceed, other airport expansion projects face similar scrutiny, and official advice suggests current policies may not align with climate targets. Campaigners have lost their final legal bid to halt Gatwick’s second runway. The £2.2bn scheme was approved by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in September last year despite opposition from local campaign groups. Two legal challenges were brought against the development consent by Peter Barclay and Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE), arguing that the approval was unlawful. The airport plans to convert its existing northern standby runway into a second operational runway, increasing annual flights by about 40,000 initially.
