The Environment Agency published the latest Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations (WFDR) classifications. Ecological status considers exposure to sewage spills and agricultural nutrients to urban and transport surface water run-off, as well as litter, petrol and garden pesticides. More than 4,500 surface water bodies were assessed and 82% of individual ecological indicators are now “Good” or High”, compared to just 17% that are “Poor”. Chair of the Environment Agency Alan Lovell said: “The latest Water Environment (WFD) Classification helps us understand where water bodies are improving and where further action is needed. Last year, water companies in England received their poorest environmental performance ratings from the Environment Agency since the assessment process began in 2011.
