The childhood friends, who grew up in St. Catharines, Ont., launched Wi Deh’ya to celebrate Caribbean music, food, fashion and traditions while helping younger Caribbean Canadians strengthen their cultural identity. The pair said growing up in the Niagara Region offered few opportunities to experience Caribbean culture outside their homes. Wi Deh’ya takes its name from Jamaican patois meaning “we’re here,” a greeting that also suggests everything is well. Beyond entertainment, the founders say Wi Deh’ya encourages younger Caribbean Canadians to embrace identities that may differ from those of earlier generations. “We’re showing what Caribbean culture looks like growing up in Canada.”
