Trump Pressures Senate To Stay In Session As August Recess Looms And Midterms Close In
['David Prior']

Senate Majority Leader John Thune is caught between a restless Republican caucus eager to leave Washington and a president demanding the chamber remain in session.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to insist that Thune “should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town'” until it passes the SAVE America Act.
The SAVE America Act is a GOP-crafted bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and mandate photo ID at the polls.
The sweeping legislation does not currently have the 60 votes needed to advance through the Senate, making its passage before recess a near impossibility.
Beyond the SAVE America Act, Trump has also pressured the Senate to pass a reconciliation blueprint before members disperse, a goal that similarly faces long odds in the chamber.
