The White House has released a trove of declassified documents showing that the FBI opened a secret 2017 counterintelligence investigation into whether President Donald Trump was acting on behalf of Russia when he fired FBI Director James Comey.
The investigation, codenamed “Oxferd Comma,” was launched in May 2017 immediately following Comey’s dismissal, according to documents published through the White House’s Government Transparency Task Force.
The opening memo also indicated that investigators would examine whether Trump or others had obstructed, or conspired to obstruct, an associated FBI counterintelligence investigation already underway.
The probe drew heavily on information developed during Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s earlier counterintelligence investigation into potential coordination between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.
Trump initially pointed to Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton private email server investigation as justification for the firing, though he later acknowledged the Russia investigation had also factored into his thinking.
