The launch was previously reported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, which said that North Korea had fired a suspected ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan (known in Korea as the East Sea). North Korea has conducted numerous missile tests in recent years, drawing international criticism and increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
