Arguably, though, Jon Favreau's 2016 The Jungle Book broke open the doors of how to use CGI to make "live-action" versions of classics, thanks to it taking in $966.6 million globally. The latest disappointing live-action remake is Moana, which has only taken in $265 million worldwide and has a very poor 31% review score on Rotten Tomatoes. This year's Moana featured Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the animated film, with the actor addressing the poor reviews to PEOPLE. With the original movie also being CG-animated, it didn't feel like there was much difference between the look of the live-action movie vs. the original, making this new remake feel needless. Johnson isn't the only one to recently weigh in on the underwhelming reception to Moana, with even Disney execs addressing its poor box-office performance.
