SIOUX FALLS — The fatal shooting of a Sioux Falls man who shot a local police officer has been ruled a justified use of force by law enforcement investigators. In response, an unnamed Sioux Falls police officer fired two bullets from a .308 service rifle. The fatal shooting was the third officer-involved shooting in South Dakota in 2026. Every officer-involved shooting in South Dakota since at least December 2006, the earliest use-of-force reports are immediately available, has been determined to be a justified use of force.
