Under these extreme conditions, minerals that are common in rocky planets can transform into entirely different crystal structures. The new research focuses on magnesium orthosilicate (Mg₂SiO₄), one of the main mineral components expected inside rocky worlds. As pressure rises, the atoms inside this mineral rearrange, creating new forms that can exist only deep within planetary interiors. The blue circles represent the planets filtered from the Hypatia catalog database (Hinkel et al., 2014) and the NASA exoplanet archive (Akeson et al., 2013; Christiansen et al., 2025). Their analysis covered pressures reaching up to 1,300 gigapascals, representing some of the most extreme conditions expected inside rocky exoplanets.
