The statement by Malta Tourism Authority chief executive Carlo Micallef has undoubtedly raised eyebrows. That may well be true, but spreading tourism across more months does not automatically mean overtourism has disappeared. More importantly, she said the threshold is crossed when residents feel that infrastructure, public spaces and community life are under strain. If enough residents have reached that conclusion, then perhaps the debate is no longer about whether Malta has overtourism.
