The increase relates to hostile vehicle mitigation works that form part of the wider project.
Hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) is the term used for safety measures designed to stop vehicles being used to deliberately or accidentally cause harm in places where lots of people gather.
The council would not disclose the precise nature of the security measures, saying specific details could not be released for security reasons.
However, officials said the system would combine fixed and automated security measures designed to improve safety for pedestrians while still allowing authorised vehicles to access Market Street, Oxford Street, and the Market Square.
The newly approved funding increase means the maximum gross development cost of the HVM element of the project will rise by £282,969.
