The national forecaster predicts temperatures will climb through the weekend before rising more significantly through the middle of next week.
A “fairly widespread heatwave” is likely across large parts of England and Wales, according to deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone.
The highest temperatures are currently forecast in East Anglia and south-east England, where highs of up to 36°C could be reached by Thursday.
“A fairly widespread heatwave is likely across large parts of England and Wales, with hot conditions developing in places.
"East Anglia and south-east England, however, could see temperatures even higher on Thursday.
