Campus Reform reports:Required Mount St. Mary’s theology course teaches New Testament through ‘racial justice’ lensStudents at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, are required to complete a theology course that assigns a book interpreting the New Testament through themes including “racial justice,” “antiracist allyship,” and “cultural assimilation.” The university’s course catalog mandates all theology majors must complete Made in God’s Image, a theology course examining Catholic Social Teaching through contemporary issues including racism, restorative justice, health care, technology, and war. One summer 2026 section taught by theology professor Dr. Love L. Sechrest requires students to read her book, Race and Rhyme: Rereading the New Testament. In the book, Sechrest examines New Testament passages involving what she describes as “intergroup conflict, ethnoracial tension, and power dynamics between dominant and minoritized groups.” Triangulating Race, Theology, and Mission, a collection arguing Christians should overcome what contributors describe as the “heresy of whiteness.”
