Despite research efforts by a team of experts from the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP), their exact species remains unconfirmed. The whales were juveniles (Image: CSIP)The specialists initially thought they may be Sowerby’s beaked whales, but said they looked unlike any other examples of the species found in the UK. A spokesman for the organisation said: "They appeared unlike any Sowerby’s the CSIP team has previously dealt with and may represent a more unusual beaked whale species for the UK. The CSIP team from the Zoological Society of London then carried out necropsies at an off-site location.
