Scientists have uncovered a novel method to improve how tiny semiconductor particles called quantum dots convert sunlight into energy for chemical reactions. Because of their unique properties, quantum dots have been explored for solar energy harvesting and photocatalysis, where light accelerates chemical reactions. The Los Alamos team addressed this issue by integrating manganese atoms into the quantum dots. This process creates a new reaction pathway that wouldn’t be possible with standard quantum dots. More impressively, these doped quantum dots could drive chemical reactions under conditions that would normally be too energy-intensive for regular quantum dots to handle.
