Later this month, about 360 students will arrive at the Foster School, the city’s first newly constructed public school in more than 60 years. The school’s opening fulfills a decadeslong push to restore a neighborhood school to Evanston’s historically Black 5th Ward. According to an Evanston/Skokie School District 65 news release distributed Thursday, the “nearly 80,000-square-foot school can serve approximately 600 students and over 40 teachers and other staff in 24 classrooms.” The district will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school, located at 1600 Simpson St., on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public and will include remarks from district and community leaders as well as guided building tours.
