After decades spent looming 700 feet atop 500 Grant St., the “Mellon” section of the “BNY Mellon” signage was taken down in June, leaving behind the now off-center “BNY” branding. BNY — formed out of a 2007 merger of Bank of New York and Pittsburgh-based Mellon Financial Corporation — scrapped the Mellon part of its branding two years ago. Though the Mellon name is retired from Pittsburgh’s skyline, many of the city’s tallest towers remain capped with recognizable corporate branding. UPMC’s logo looms largest atop the U.S. Steel Tower, Pittsburgh’s tallest at 64 stories. It’s perhaps fitting for the $34 billion health system, Pennsylvania’s largest private employer with 100,000 employees. The oldest of Pittsburgh’s skyscrapers with corporate signage is likely the art-deco Koppers Tower, where the green signage of Koppers Chemical matches the 1920s tower’s green roof.
