A Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State, has sentenced a 30-year-old school security guard, Chidiebere Kalu, to one year in prison for segxwally abusing a 10-year-old female pupil at Radiant Glory Academy in Umuichichi, Aba. For the first offence, the court sentenced him to one year in prison without the option of a fine. Reacting to the verdict, the Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), in collaboration with the Child Protection Network (CPN), Abia State Chapter, welcomed the conviction, describing it as a major victory for child protection and a strong message that perpetrators of child abuse will be held accountable. Investigations revealed that the abuse allegedly took place within the school premises.Kalu was found guilty on two counts—indecent assault and intimidating a minor. For the first offence, the court sentenced him to one year in prison without the option of a fine.
