HYDERABAD: Irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday cautioned farmers not to get carried away by the recent rains and advised them to not opt for water-intensive crops, including paddy, during the Kharif season. He directed district administrations to clearly communicate the water situation to farmers before they commited themselves to water-intensive crops. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the present reservoir levels, coupled with the rainfall outlook for the latter part of the monsoon, required extremely cautious crop planning. Uttam Kumar Reddy also directed rural water supply department officials to work closely with the irrigation department to ensure that sufficient water was reserved for drinking-water needs.
