The Sonoma City Council has voted 4 to 1 to introduce an ordinance that would more than triple monthly council stipends from $300 to $950.
According to the Sonoma Index-Tribune, supporters argue the first pay bump in 18 years will remove financial barriers, encouraging a more diverse group of residents to run for local office.
Mayor Ron Wellander cast the lone dissenting vote, raising concerns over using taxpayers’ money during a time of economic uncertainty.
In other business, council members gave final approval to keep the Transcendence Theatre Company performing at the Field of Dreams through 2029.
Meanwhile, closed-session contract negotiations for a new city manager remain ongoing.
