Smith Collection/Gado/Contributor/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON — A coalition of attorneys general from 20 states filed an amicus brief Aug. 5 challenging Idaho’s ban prohibiting transgender students from using bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. The amicus brief also states that the Idaho bill is discriminatory and imposes intrusive restrictions on transgender and nonbinary individuals. Furthermore, the brief emphasized the discriminatory harassment faced by students who were openly transgender in school. In the U.S. Transgender Survey, it was reported that “94% of transgender adults reported being more satisfied, at 79%, after choosing to live consistently … with their gender identity.” This amicus brief combats this discrimination in an effort to protect the civil rights of transgender people in the United States.
