Craig Stevens, 39, of Allars Bank, turned up at Selkirk Sheriff Court with a bag of possessions anticipating he would be sent to prison.
He admitted shouting and swearing and uttering threats of violence at Backdamgate, Hawick, on May 19.
Stevens also assaulted a man, attempted to head butt him and punched him on the body.
Sheriff Peter Paterson told Stevens the court was perfectly entitled to jail him but added that, with “considerable hesitation”, he would instead impose supervision for 18 months and 100 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.
