MÉRIDA, YUCATAN — Having a job no longer guarantees economic stability for thousands of families in Yucatán, where more than 1.1 million people face labor exclusion or precarious working conditions, according to a recent report by the Dignified Work Observatory (Observatorio de Trabajo Digno).
Although Yucatán maintains low official unemployment rates, the local labor landscape remains burdened by insufficient wages, lack of social security, unstable contracts, and minimal union representation.
The report details that roughly 343,000 individuals in Yucatán remain excluded from the formal labor market.
An estimated 64% lack social security coverage, and 763,000—representing 65% of the active workforce—do not earn enough income to purchase two basic family food baskets.
Additionally, nine out of ten salaried workers lack union representation to negotiate better workplace conditions.
